Positive correlation length $L$ of the random roughness profile. The Gaussian filter has standard deviation $L$ ; consequently, away from the endpoint correction, the autocorrelation of the generated profile is proportional to

Larger values produce smoother, more slowly varying roughness; smaller values produce finer features and require correspondingly finer spline sampling.
