The parameter defines the transverse component $k_r$ as a fraction of the wavenumber $k_+=\omega \sqrt{\varepsilon_+ \mu_+}$ where $\varepsilon_+$ and $\mu_+$ denote the corresponding scalar permittivity and permeability, respectively. The ratio $\frac{k_r}{k_+}$ is defined by this parameter.
