After a simulation with transparent boundary, an a posteriori estimator checks if the PML settings were sufficient to introduce no artificial truncation error to the solution. If necessary, the PML is adapted and the solution is recomputed with increased accuracy settings. This parameter controls how the quality of the PML is estimated.

Setting it to IncomingField the error is estimated in relation to the incident source field which is the default setting.

If the value ScatteredField is used, the error is estimated with respect to the scattered field, leaving the computational domain. This setting should be used, if the user is interested to a high quantitative degree in the amount of scattered light, and this is expected to be of much lower intensity than the incident field.
